CPU vs GPU bottleneck
If your PC feels slower than the hardware list suggests, one side is often waiting on the other. Spotting which side matters before you spend money.
CPU bottleneck signs
- GPU usage sits well below 95–99% while FPS is lower than expected.
- 1% lows are rough in CPU-heavy games, open worlds, or esports titles.
- Raising graphics settings barely changes FPS (load never reaches the GPU).
GPU bottleneck signs
- GPU usage stays near max while FPS scales clearly with resolution/settings.
- Lowering resolution or presets gives a big FPS jump.
- A stronger CPU does almost nothing for average FPS at your target settings.
Use FrameBalance for a quick pairing estimate, then verify in the games you care about with an overlay (GPU load, CPU thread usage, frametimes).
